Problem # p027

Carnot-efficiency, Ocean Temperature Differences

Electrical power can be developed in principle utilizing the naturally occuring decrease of temperature with depth in the ocean which has been observed at many different locations.

At one particular spot the ocean's surface temperature has been observed to be 70°F (=530°R), while at a depth of 1/3 mile the temperature is 35oF.

Determine the maximum possible thermal efficiency for any power cycle operating between these temperatures.
